Are there any express trains that can get you in a reasonable amount of time from Hong Kong to Shanghai? If so, is it possible to purchase tickets from the United States, or must I wait until I arrive in Hong Kong?

There is an express train from Hongkong to Shanghai every the other day. It leaves Hongkong at 15:00 and arrives at 15:54 the next day. The price for the hard sleeper is HK$530 and the soft sleeper is HK$825. I don't believe that you can purchase the ticket in the State. You can only buy it after arriving in Hongkong.

We took the HK to Shanghai train in Oct. '02. Tickets were puchased in San Francisco. It is a 25 hour ride, we had a "soft deluxe berth, which means it is a single compartment, closed locking door, bedrolls for sleeping. You go thru customs after about an hour of travel in Guangzhou, I believe. At this station, everyone exits to the station. There are 2 forms to fill out before passing thru customs. Be sure to get both or you will have to leave your place in line and start over. We checked our baggage, most don't. Shanghai, retrieval of baggage requires waiting in a special area, 5 people at a time get to pay a small fee to retrieve their luggage. Lonely Planet guidebook is helpful as it has the chinese characters that one can point to...so even if they speak only cantonese, they still can understand the characters. Good Luck, we were 38 days all over China...it was wonderful.
