touring Tashkorgan and Taklamakan Desert

Can someone give me some information about Tashkorgan and
Taklamakan Desert.

What are some activities or sites one can visit in those 2 places?
Can I get around by myself or I need a private car and a tour guide?
Since I do not speak Chinese, how safe is it for me to travel in
those
2 places by myself?
What is the daily bus schedule from Kashger to Tashkorgan and
back?

Any suggestions will be appreciated.
