My whole family will travel from NYC to HK at around 8/19 for 2 weeks. So far I wasn't able to find any cheap airfare (less than $800 per person). Is this travel period considered as HI season so airfare won't drop. I do not want to book now. Just want to hear others opinion. Thanks

Hi !! I did some checking for you..... I think the $800.00 is most likely a very good price !! As to the season, after August 16th, it goes from 'high' to 'shoulder' !! So this is the mid-level price in August 19th. I checked with Orbitz and it is $1227 with all taxes included in the price. Then I checked with my travel agent in Los Angeles (Chinese owners) and their best price from JFK to HK was exactly $1000. incld, taxes. So, I think if you can get it for $800. this is great !!! Just so you know, from LAX to CAN (Guangzhou) my best price is about $700. So in comparison, I think you have a good deal there !! I hope this helps you ?? Safe Trip !!!

Thanks. Actually I haven't bought or booked anything yet. I was just hoping to get it for less than $800 per person. With 2 adults and 2 kids it really add up a lot. I will wait for a while and hopefully the price will start to drop.

Normally, airfare prices will not “drop” with time; they may in fact, increase as you get closer to your flight date. In this regard, I think that unless there is a sudden reversal in the increasing cost of oil (jet fuel) your $800 quote may seem very attractive, come this Summer, with more and more people discovering China, and traveling now. !!??

Yes, all flights and fares discussed are for a round-trip ticket. So the price he quoted, is a very good deal. Also, JFK to LAX is about $300 to $350, and about five hours each way. Moreover, the best fare from LAX to HK is about $998 including all fees/taxes; therefore, it would be cheaper and much faster (if you are on the east coast) to fly the north trans-Polar route out of New York, than to fly across the USA to L.A. and then take the non-stop China Southern Airlines flight across the Pacific. A north Polar route refers to flights over the North Pole area along a longitudinal direction, connecting major North American cities with their Chinese and other Asian counterparts. The current Sino-US transpacific air routes follow a latitudinal direction moving West/East around the Earth. China Southern Airlines, the largest airline in China, was the modern day Asian pioneer in this regard and the first airline to fly the twin engine Boeing 777 over the Pole. I have great respect for this Chinese national airline, and for the professionalism of Chinese flight crews, whenever I fly to China !!! :) :)

This shows the trans-Polar route from New York to Beijing, which the smart management team at China Southern Airlines pioneered for Chinese commercial aviation several years ago. This is from an aviation navigation web-site. [It was supposed to 'attach' to the previous post, but did not do so.] As you can see, the route is almost directly over the North Pole. This saves one to two hours of flying time, and many thousands of gallons of jet fuel, as well as reducing airframe and engine operation time. Further, the reduced fuel load, enables the airline to have the option to carry more passengers and/or cargo. Moreover, the atmosphere is very still over the artic, and this low wind factor not only improves fuel economy, but also makes for a very smooth flight to beautiful China !!
