Is there direct air between Shangri-la (or elsewhwere in Yunnan) and Lhasa? My wife and I had planned to drive from Nepal to Lhasa but we are changing our plans due to the political situation. We are thinking about Tibet by way of Yunnan and see Nepal another time. Does anyone know about connections? Does our plan make sense?

Yes, there are directly flights from Zhongdian to Lhasa, it runs every Monday or Friday (you have to give me your exact date, so that i can check the schedule for you) from April 10 to June 30, the Chine Southern Airlines, CZ3417 10:35/ 12:20. After July 1, there will be new timetable, and it is said, then the flight will be available daily.

Your plan is very good, traveling from China to Nepal to China via Tibet is much easier than the vice versa, because of the Tibet Travel Permit issue.

Rita - thank you very much. If you know more about the area, are there any "must do" activities that you would recommend for 5 days in Yunnon province? Thanks again.

It's 1700km between Zhongdian and Lhasa, bus traveling takes about 5 ~ 6 days, it's harsh and difficult. And that's why it's so appealing to the adventurers:)). If you have time and would like to experience heartquakes, this is a good choice.

There is a sleeper bus runs every three days between Zhongdian and Lhasa.

Good luck!

hello Rita,

Do you know anything about the TTB and the bus. Is it possible to take the bus without a TTB? And how mucht would the bus be?
Any additional information on the bus from Zhongdian to Lhasa would be most welcome...
