It is the first time to hear of the Diaolou! The castle tower (if I call it correctly) is soooo great! Especially when I first saw several standing in the green field, I thought it should be some places of European country (of course from the pics of the website that LESAIGNEUR recommended)!

But the only pity is that website hasn't the English version~~

from what the words show, I just know that this Diaolou has two main functions: one is to prevent waterlogging, and other is to avoid the brigandage. And now it became a sepcial sightseeing of Kaiping.

This building is Ruishi Diaolou, located behind Jinjiangli Village.
Constructed in 1921 at the peak of the style’s popularity. It has nine floors and is the highest diaolou at Kaiping.

In 2001 the State Council declared the Kaiping Diaolou a Protected Cultural Relic.
Presently the local government is applying them for the U.N. World Culture Heritage.

zili village offers 15 Diaolou, so, note Zili village is one of the 5 property sites for the inscription of Kaiping Diaolou on the World Cultural Heritage list.
the village is very beautiful, and with the natural environment!
The Lotus ponds creat a unique scene. I love it too mutch!

Kaip?g is located in southwest of Guangzhou 136km and 164km from the Macau border
you have various architectures, which are partly Portuguese Gothic.
Some squat brick fortresses dating back to the 17th century were intended as places of refuge for whole villages.
Simple concrete towers were merely lookout points intended to provide warning of approaching bandits, but by the 1920s these had evolved into massive fortified residences up to nine stories high, sprouting turrets and loopholes, balconies and cupolas, borrowed from half-understood European styles encountered everywhere from Macau to Manila.
