It's definitely convenient to change SGD to RMB here, don't bother making the trip down to Chinatown to shop around for better rates. The rates in China are fixed, so it's the same whether you change at the currency exchange booths at Beijing airport or in the banks here. I've just checked the rates online and they seem to be pretty good, almost 5 RMB to 1 SGD!

It's very convenient to change currencies of any countries into Chinese yuan, don't worry. You can change at the hotels, banks, and the star-rated hotels and banks are all over the city.

Have a nice trip:)

I attended a Beijing Tour briefing yesterday. My tour leader told us it is advisable to exchange the currency in Spore as the exchange rate is usually more favourable at home than in China. It appears that this may not be true based on the comments above. Anyway I have exchanged some RMB at S$1 to RMB $4.93 and will bring some Singapore currency along.

Based on what I've been seeing, the rate seems to be better here in China than in Singapore. Good luck.
