![]() | Hi Amanda I'm sure other members will give you lots of pieces of advice, but the one thing I would suggest is that you get the names of the places you are going to, and staying at (ie: hotels, cities, tourist attractions) written in Chinese characters. If you're visiting major cities then a lot of Chinese can speak English so you shouldn't have big problems getting around. Of course, you can quickly pick up some basic Chinese: Hello (ni hao) and thank you (xie xie). It's quite easy to find places on the web where you can hear the pronunciation. A smile helps a lot and is universal and try to keep a sense of humour if you encounter problems, China isn't geared to independent travel, but it's all part of the experience. ![]() | I think it is better to choose bigger cities or famous destinations if this is your first time to travel alone in China. They can provide better accomodation, dining as well as other services. Xi'an, Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou, Huangshan, Yangshuo are all good choices. You can read some travel reviews about these cities in the forum and then make your own decision. Good luck in China! |
