Please can you advise me what is meant by modest dress when sightseeing in China. Would shorts and strappy tops be acceptable for my wife to wear and shorts and t-shirts for myself. Are there any restrictions on where you can enter if you are not dressed correctly.

While some of the 'chick' young girls here where 'hot pants' I would suggest at least a longer length of shorts with shoe string tops.

Very few men in China where shorts but they tend to roll up both the legs of thier 'dress trousers' and thier shirts exposing their chests to all and sundry.

Just remember that in some of the rural areas they are not used to seeing foriegners so you will be the centre of attention whether you like it or not.

I think casual dressing is fine as long as you don't over-expose yourself. It is quite common to see tourists dressed in shorts & T-shirts - esp during summer.
The local men have the habit of rolling up their long pants to air their legs. They don't normally roll up their shirts to air their bodies except in villages and at home or places where they feel familiar with.

Hi Clive,

There is no special restrictions for your dress while traveling in China. But you should be ready to get more attention for you are a foreigner. Anyway, the Chinese are friendly.

Hi There
A massive thank you to all of you who took time out to help us fellow travelors.
We are on a 22 day trip to China in September and we would hate to upset the local people hence the question.
We are looking forward very much to our trip and any other tips anyone can give us would be very gratefully received.
Best Wishes
Clive
