I'm going to be traveling to Beijing mid-June and bringing along
a brand new apple laptop with me as a gift for a friend living
there. Is there anything that I should be aware of in terms of
customs? It's simply one computer in a laptop bag. Any advice
would be appreciated. ; )

I brought my laptop to China in March 06.

I carried it as hand luggage. I didn't have any problems although I went through Shanghai and not Beijing.

Leaving London however, anyone carrying a laptop as hand luggage was required to remove it from the bag, put it in a plastic bag and then put it through the baggage checks. Not a problem, it just took a little extra time!

Enjoy your trip.

I believe that u can just walk into China with your laptop slung over your shoulder - as used item. I used to do this myself.
