Hello. I am coming to work in Xian on the UK A level project as a teacher of ICT and Physics. Any advice and tips about living and working in Xian would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Hello Tony. I think that you will find Xi'An to be a great city to live in. Some tips that come immediately to mind are: 1) set aside the notion that you, as a pedestrian on the streets, have any rights whatsoever because you don't. Cars, buses and just about anything with wheels own the road, so be very very careful at all times. Do not assume that a green light in your favor to cross the street has any meaning, because it doesn't. 2) never get out of a taxi on the left / drivers side, always the right. The left side door will be taken off by the first passing vehicle. 3) never get off a bus without first looking both ways. Bikes and small motorcycles will be passing between the bus and the curb 4) pack lightweight, quick dry clothes. Your apartment might have a washing machine, but almost certainly will not have a dryer 5) if you are a blade shaver, bring about a years supply. The blades available here will cut your face to ribbons 6) bring comfortable shoes/footwear. You will do a tremendous amount of walking here.

And, of course, bring your camera.

Xi'an has more than you can expect, the splendid culture , marvelous cultural heritage ,friendly and forthright people ,luxurious shooping malls ,KFCs ,MCs ,Pizza hut ,Carrefour can be easily found and it is a city combines both modern and classical .

and also something you may not expect , the crowded commercial street , bad weather occasionally , traffic jam , some unfriendly vendors or pickpockets , but that is a common version in almost all over the world .

Anyway , only when you are here ,can you finally know what the real Xi'an is ^_^

Thanks folks. Some really useful tips there. Next question: How difficult is it to bring my small dog to Xian? Are there kennels for pets during vacation time?

Regards,

Tony

I remember there was a post concern about how to bring pets to China , you need to search for it .

In China ,we usually let our relatives or friends to take after pets during the period of outing , maybe some pets hospital can provide this service also . I don't have pet myself ,so I'm not very certain about it :(
