I know that in the past, China used to allow their people an afternoon siesta. This was practised till maybe about 10 yrs ago ?
I thought it was a very good practice. I find it so relaxing to have just 15 mins nap during lunch time. I feel so recharged after the nap.
What happened to it ? Why did China abolish it ?

When I was in Shenzhen.I had to go to the hospital because of a pinched nerve.I was surprised when almost everyone who worked in the ward layed down and took a nap!! I also noticed where I was staying that at 1 o'clock in the afternoon all work on the building stopped.I asked why? Is it lunch time? I was told NO,it was nap time.I guess in some places they still take a afternoon nap..I know I got so used to doing it when I was in China that I now do it when I am in America:)) Hmmm...guess I'm just lazy..lol.

U mean it is still there ?
I deal a lot with Chinese trading companies and importers of petroleum products. Approx 10 yrs ago, we wouldn't/could'nt contact our counterparts for about 2 hrs after lunch - ie till around 3 pm, because it was lunch/siesta time.
But we are able to do so now. Our Chinese counterparts told us "mei yo wu shui la" !

It was not abolished. But many companies are starts at 9 and ends at 5 now. So they just have time to have a lunch. No time to rest.

Yes, siesta is not bolished, but we don't have time to have it.

One reason is that we are busy; the other reason is that we have been used to have no siesta. :0

Taking a nap after lunch is more of a kind of habit, to me, it is not at all necessary on weekdays, hard to say on weekends:-).

There are lots of aged people still keep the habit which they take for granted(as basic human rights, haha~) they can be furious if being disturbed when napping. So be careful!

There are more and more companies that do various international business intend to set their working schedule according to the time zone of their foreign business partners, e.g. work on Saturdays or have night shifts ...

BTW, is the word siesta originated from South America? I am wondering if the people there keep the habit or not. :P

I think u guys/gals will regret not having the siesta. It is a recharging session so that you can carry on in the afternoon session as efficiently as you are in the morning session.

I have had siesta a few times during my past more than 20 years ,I force myself to keep awake on daytime :( one important reason is that when I fall to sleep I don't want to get up until dark . Siesta make me feel more sleepy ,if I have nap at noon I cann't fall to sleep easily at night
