China's University Entrance Exams

Was watching the news today. The Entrance Exam for University is presently in progress throughout China. Holy mackerel, it is a big/important affair. Even the parents are involved.

University Entrance Exams is definitely one of the most important things for parents. They hold that this exam can decide the future of the children.

I know a student who has successfully completed 3 years at a college and wanted to do two more years at a university.... but she only got 59 in the compulsory Politics, and so was denied the opportunity to continue. Is this really appropriate to the China that the government says it is trying to build?
