The Hainanese speak a different dialect to the normal mandarin you hear, even their pingyin is different. My mom said there could be 3 or 4 different dialects spoken on the island depending on which area. My dad is from WenChang in Hainan. His family isn't the native Hainanese, they migrated there about 500 years ago from Fujian.
You might wanna get a translator (Hainanese local preferred) with you when you head to places where there aren't many tourists.

Yes, you are right. There are several different dialects in Hainan. It is said that dialect in Wenchang is the standard Hainan dialect. It's really very different with mandarin. I have lived here for about 6years, but frankly speaking, I can hear nothing, so difficult to understand. : )

Moreover, I have never thought to learn it, seems so difficult for me. haha...I remembered when I was in my college here, one of my teachers who is a Hainanese. He said if a person who is older than 18years can learn Hainan dialect well, he is a genius. My sister is a genius, she learn Hainan dialect after 21 yers old. :)
