Will be flying from Hohhot to Beijing during mid Aug. Any recommendations on hostel stay?

Would like to visit The Great Wall, should I join a tour group or go on my own? Prefer to be away from the big crowd, which part is a better choice.

BTW, any tour guide to engage or Audio set to rent while visiting forbidden city? I would like to know the history of what I am seeing.

I stayed in this hostel last summer, it's located in the Hutong, really liked it :)

Also has a cool Great Wall 'Tour' from Simatai to Jinshanling. About a 5 hour walk and much quieter than other sections of the wall.

Even if you don't stay at the hostel they can still pick you up. They don't provide a guide, just transport to and from, so you're free to do your own thing.

The audio guides for the Forbidden City are good, no need to hire a guide.
