I've always been uncomfortable around many people, yet I am returning to Beijing and Shenyang. (I live in a town of 1000 people and feel that it is overcrowded.)

If the crush of people overwhelms me, where can I go for sanctuary that is easily reachable from Beijing?

I must say that when I was in Shanghai in 1978, the crush of people did not bother me at all. Everyone seemed to provide a polite comfort zone for everyone else, at least that is how I remember it....

I am not expecting that same polite-ness in modern Beijing in 2006. (Maybe I will be wrong...)

BJ is a huge city with most visitors wanting to be there. So u can expect it to be crowded - definitely more than 1000 people - anywhere, even in shopping malls or at the main tourist spots !
I think like most countries, China also tends to be polite and nice to freigners and visitors.
Enjoy the crowd for a change.

I recommend you go to the Hutong in Beijing to escape from the crowds... These are usually quiet, leafy and a brilliant place to relax and feel like you are in a different world. Many have small cafes or bars where you can drink tea or have a beer and watch life go by. Easily accessible too...

The last time I was in China were a few bicycles and even fewer cars. I never leave my hotel room when I am in Los Angeles. There is a reason I live in the forest 5 miles outside of a small town.

I guess I will just have to see.

Griz,
I'm a lot like you when it comes to being around people but I did not have much of a problem with it when in China.Riding on the bus when people are coming home from work or on shopping day was a little nerve racking.I think you will do just fine..besides you will be with your young lady so your mind will not be on people around you..hehe.. Relax and enjoy yourself:))

I doubt I will have any discomfort in the villages, but my lovely lady has never been to Beijing so we will spend some time there.

Hopefully I will be thoroughly distracted! ;^)

In your situation, sure you will be distracted from the other beauty of BJ, Steve.
Enjoy the company. U probably will need to return to BJ another time to take a closer look !
