We are looking to travel to Beijing in the middle of August and heard that June-August was peak tourist season. Does this mean that hotels and flights will be busy? We are going to Hong Kong for a few days first and will want to buy flights to Beijing once we get there - will this be possible or will flights be booked out? Should we instead book the flights in advance? Thanks for any help you can give.

Not at all. If the China tourism seasons can be classified as High/peak season; Shoulder season and Low/ slack season, the time from June to August can be the shoulder season, because it's very hot most parts of the country. Hotels and flight/ train tickets are comparatively easier to get. But booking earlier is usually better than later...

Yes, June and August is the peak season in China because students are on vacation at that time! It is also the hottest season in China. So if you can change your schedule, it's a good idea to come in China in Sept. Book flights in advance, you may get higher discount! Welcome to China!

Don't really know about the situation in Aug but BJ being the capital city of China, there are plenty of flights there. From HK alone, there are more than a dozen flights a day to BJ. There are also many alternatives one can get to BJ, if needs be - from HK direct or from Macau, Zhuhai, SZ or even GZ. U can also consider taking a ferry to other parts of S.China and catch a plane from there. So I wouldn't worry about this.

You are perfectly right, May, I didn't take students' travels into consideration. Thanks for pointing it out!! But the students' travel do not affect the main tourism market, almost all of them travel by train (hard seats & hard sleepers), and the accommodations they choose are far from star-rated hotels.
