| hi. my wife and i are coming to kunming in february next year. we want to buy a couple of bikes so that we can bike from kunming to laos and vietnam. we don't need the best bikes, just fairly good ones. is it possible to buy bikes easily in kunming? and also other accessories like panniers, helmets, etc. do you know if there are any places to buy used bikes second hand? also, do you know how much they cost? i have heard that biking is very popular in kunming. we are very excited to visit. thank you for any information you can give us! - chesley |

| Hopefully you will get a response or two from someone who know more about bikes but you should have no trouble buying what you need and may even be able to buy second hand. The accessories may not be so readily avaiable. Do a google "cycling in china' and you will come across a variety website and bloggs of folk who have cycled around in China and may be able to contact them regards to equipment that may not be readily available. Hope you have a great trip. |

| I am a local resident in Kunming, Your question is ridiculous, bike is the main transportation instrument in Kunming. For your purpose, you can buy a "mountain bike", it is suitable for long journey. it eqipped with helmet, water jug, ect. By the way, I am a lawyer in Kunming, if you like, when you come to Kunming, we can chat in tea house. My E-mail:163.com|kmlawyerchen |

| I am a local resident in Kunming, Your question is NOT ridiculous!! there are literally hundreds of small bike shops, most selling low-end garbage (similar to murray or huffy). you can buy a brand new bike for as little as $15...or you can buy second-hand (i.e. stolen) for even less. there are several decent bike shops near green lake, emphasis on mtb's, but with some road bikes available. you can find accessories like racks , but i've seen no panniers. not much interest in touring. helmets, gloves, shoes (up to size 10), but expensive. you can buy a nice (xt-comp) mtb starting at $500 up to around US$1000. i suggest you bring your touring gear: clothing, panniers, helmet. bikes will come with front shocks, so you might want to bring a couple mountainman front racks if you use front panniers. the shops i've been to do not have much in the way of non-susp forks. bike theft is rampant. bring a kryptonite. |
