Dress codes?

Are there dress codes for nice restaurants and clubs in Beijing?

My current plan is for khaki pants and short sleeve shirts - no ties or jackets.

Will this prevent me of going into many places?

Most places can accept casual dress - incl tourist attraction spots.
But it would be nice to be at least smart casual when going to more respectable places like high class hotels or restaurants or when visiting your gal's parents for the 1st time. Your gal will also feel "nice and respected" if u dress smartly for certain important occasions.
China may not have reached most western standard yet but to err on the respectable end is preferred, if unsure. On the other hand, don't over-dress.
