| Modelling in China I'm interested to know the first hand experiences of expats who've worked as models in China (of Asia in general). I'm in Beijing now with intentions of heading to SHanghai. I'm not an exceptionally tall guy (only 173cm), but that's ok because I'm not interested in RUNWAY modelling. My question relates to Photographic modelling and the like (clothing, underwear, magazine, advertising etc...) Anyways, I don't have a professional model's portfolio (I simply have pictures). What is a model portfolio anyways (does it mean the difference between finding and not finding work). I mean aren't picture attachments and a quick email enough to convince Chinese modelling agencies that you're attractive and bodily-abled enough to model? If not, is getting this portfolio worth it? How much does it cost and what does it entail? Can I use it internationally after I leave China too? I know I sound dense but I'm just trying to gather information and do my homework. How much are models in Beijing or Shanghai paid? WHat kind of non-runway work do they find? Is it legit or a waste of time? I've been invited for a meeting with some agency working out of an office building near SOHO in Beijing. What can i expect from them (what do Chinese modelling agencies want). Is it anything like English teaching? Ok, that was a joke. Please share your Asian (China) modelling experiences here. Thanks again in advance... |

| Hi Kian,I am model in Chengdu and also own a Modeling agency specialised in foreigner models (www.westernagency.cn). You are right to hope do modeling in Asia, it's the best place for us foreigner to make easy money.First, Your portfolio : The portfolio is the most important for a model, you must do it, I don't think the shanghai modeling agency offer it (contrario of me !!). Your portfolio will give the first feeling to the customer. There's 2 way to get a good portfolio. The first one (the best and cheaper), you prospect photographers and find one who need a foreigner model. Because he needs you, you will not have to pay any money. The second one is to choose a very good photographer and accept to pay for half a day photos. To get a good portfolio you need 200 photos, it's very important to get the largest choice. In chengdu, half a day cost between 1000 and 3000 RMB; in Shanghai I guess around 4000 RMB. You have to prepare this day, go to the barber shop, prepare your favorite fashion clothes ... Your portfolio will discribe yourself so choose a style you feel well in it.Then contact by email chinese agency. If one is interesting, don't sign any exclusivity contract with them. If they want you to be exclusive they have to pay you monthly. You have the right to be model in 2 or 3 modelling agency, that's not a problem. The payement for a professionel model in Shanghai is around 8000 RMB/day. The fact is that the models in Shanghai are very good and the competition is strong, hope you're good looking with bulding body.Visit those website, you will know : http://www.kmodels.com/ |
