anyone foreign tourist who wants to travel in Tibet must apply the permit first then you can buy the air tickets or train tickets ; the most convenient place to Tibet is Chengdu where you can buy air or train tickets

Thanks for the tip. Can you buy the permit in Chengdu before you go or do you recommend getting one before heading to China? Do you need to join a group in order to go or can you now buy a single ticket? About how much does an American need to pay for the permit? Thanks so much!

basically , the administrative office of tibet will charge you 50 .and you should be admitted by
a travel agency first ,so they will charge you for the application service .Normally , I think about 100 yuan will be ok for the permit .You'd better apply for the permit and sent your data to the travel agency first .you can buy a single ticket with the permit
