Hi all, I am visiting Beijing in late August for a limited time of 5 days so wanted to make a trip or two out of Beijing. Does anyone have any advice on travelling to Mongolia for a day trip or maybe 2 days there - I would fly if I were to do this, Is it worth the trip to Mongolia and what would be the rough costs involved in flying? Thanks for any hints,

If I am correct you meant Inner Mongolia, right? Because that's also what I'd like to suggest with your limited schedule of only 1 or 2 days out there. It's worth the trip and 1 or 2 days is a little tight, but it's not impossible. one way Beijing-Hohhot: 500+50+40 = 590, try to book in advance and hopefully you can get a better price than that.

Not4google.. have you been to BJ before ? Just asking because you can easily fill 5 days doing stuff within BJ rather than give yourself a hectic schedule flying off to another province. Whatever :) Have a good trip.

Hi, Thanks for all the info - I havent been to Beijing before and think I will be sticking to Beijing but was considering going to Shanghai for 2 days. Is that recommended considering the short time I have in China - (Beijing 5 days)? Thanks again,

Joining in with LemonCactus... There is plenty to see in Beijing. I just returned from an 11 day visit and took in a little of Shenyang and Beijing. I could have spent all 11 days in Beijing and seen only a fraction of it at a break-neck pace. I recommend as slow a pace as you can stand so that you absorb it all. One thing I would do better is the Beijing Hutongs. We took a bicycle rickshaw ride - which was fun - but then hurried off to see the acrobatic show. Spending the evening in the Hutongs with the very nice waterfront restaurants/bars would have been enjoyable. BTW - Make a list of your sites and have them translated into Chinese. This will make it much easier to deal with the taxi drivers. One of my co-workers in Beijing did this for me and it really helped.

There are package tours to Inner Mongolia from Beijing at most of travel agents. 3 day trip 560-600RMB(by bus) . If you ride horse and camel + approx. 200RMB By train, it costs the same, but takes a bit longer time than by bus. So you cannot make it in 5 day trip in Beijing. An agent said that July and August are vacation season, highway to Inner Mongolia has so much traffic because of many cars that go to Greate wall in the same highway. So bus comes back to Beijing 4th morning (3:00 am). So this is not possible as well. Recently there is a kungfu show, that is very interesting http://www.piao.com.cn/ http://www.etours.cn/ Include this in your list as well.
