How does China work now???

In fact, in 1978 there were not even very many bicycles in Shanghai. The ship next to mine in port was bringing in a big shipment of bicycles and little TVs. I was told back in 1978 that a Chinese woman hoped to be lucky enough to find a husband who could buy her a bicycle and a sewing machine. Boy! OH Boy! Have times have changed.... It seems that people can own property - homes and cars - and be entreprenuers making as much money as they can now in China. How does the "open up" policy and free enterprise work? Does the government tax the people? Does the government own all of the businesses??? How does the system work now? A friend asked me last night and I had to profess complete ignorance.

The Three Major Items at that time for men to make their women happy and felt lucky enough were:
A bicycle (Yong Jiu Brand)
A watch (Shanghai Brand)
A sewing maching (whatever the brand) lol

Man! OH Man! Times have changed ... a lot!

Yup, people can own property, and make money as much as they can, legally:P

China's opening up policy is a very successful one and she keeps opening up and bringing profits to the country and her people. Great policy. There are more and more foreigners have been attracted to invest in China.

Yes, at least the government places a tax on my income:(
