Hi everyone..
Would anyone be able to help me with some information.
I currently have a z visa which expires in March 2007. I will be leaving my current school and going to another one (in the same organisation but in a different province). My school originally sponsored the visa and wants to cancel the z visa and issue me with a tourist visa. What I acutally want to know is if a second school can convert the visa to their province if they employ me? The new school have said they can't get me a z visa in Zhejiang province because I don't have a degree.
I'd really appreciate some help on this as soon as possible.... I have to leave in about 5 weeks...

What the new school said was right, and applicable to most places in China. It is not something the school can control. First they report the cases with the teachers' details (including the education backgrounds) they want to hire to their upper unit of the city or province that is in charge of educational affairs. Only if they get the approval, they can apply the visa for you in the local public security office. (The process might be slightly different from what i said above, that is about what it takes)
Degree/ diploma is the first thing they have to see before they know how great a teacher you may really are.

Hi Rita
Thanks for your reply.
I don't think having a degree or a diploma makes you a good teacher.
In fact, I've met many teachers in China with degrees, and there are very few who can do a better job than me.
It's quite sad that we are judged by these measures instead of by references and experience.
Anyway, I will keep looking and thanks once again for your advice.

To the best of my knowledge, there are many schools/colleges prefer those who have Tesol Certificates over non-language teaching relavant diplomas holders, this is a good gateway for those those who currently do not have a diploma - if this information is helpful.

Wish you good luck.

Hi Glorian

I have just been through some of this.... but not relack of degree. I agree with Rita that you will find it hard to get a job without one...however you got your current job. It depends on the locality and whether the school has the right contacts in the PSB. I know you would be wasting your time in Hebei which is strict. I have just gort a new Z in a way that some areas won't do it... because we have that all important relationship.

The rules now say you can transfer a Z (so I am told) but you will need the job offer and visa application in before the current one expires.

It is not that the school will get you a toursit visa... you apply for it...though they can assist of course.

NOTE, that normally u can only get a 15 day 'tourist visa' when the Z expires and it is suposed to be NON RENEWABLE (In Shanghai the office gave me 7 day extension only then I had to go to HK) where they always grant a 3 month tourist visa. Of course, if you have the all important relationship with someone in your current PSB office you may well get a 3 month tourist visa!!!

Hope that helps!

Hi there
Thanks so much for your response.
It was very helpful. Just one question if you don't mind... You say that I need the visa application and job offer before the current one expires - is that my current contract, or the z visa? If it's the visa then I shouldn't have too much of a problem, because that expires in March next year.
The school where I'm at are a little full of it at the moment, and generally they insist that they have to cancel the z visa and get a tourist visa. I read on another site that they can cancel the "work permit - the little red book" but that it shouldn't affect the visa at all.
I'm keeping every finger crossed in regards to this - finding the job was the easy part. It's actually getting the visa that's causing the hiccup. The new job is in Hangzhou (well hopefully anyway) and I believe they're pretty strict there.
Thanks so much once again to you both.
