![]() | Am planning to go to China in Dec/Jan and know it'll be very, very cold then. So would like to ask those who've already been whether I should get a large winter coat here (UK) and lug it over with me or get one when I'm out there? I mean, what kind of choice is there in China and would it beat buying an expensive one back in the UK. Also, is China still as beautiful in the winter? Thanks!! |

![]() | The weather can be verious according to the place you supplied. 1.Cities. Beijing can be the very cold (-10'c), dry and windy, might snow. Xi'an where i live ,less cold(-5'c),dry and might snow.Shanghai 0'c....but humid and windy. You can either take your thick coat or buy one here in the city. But obviously it will take your time to shopping here. You can get good bargan in the shopping more or if you like outdoor shops. 2.Few people will go hiking in the mountains(I can tell many muotians from your list) like you. anyhow, it could be snow in the mountain and froozen during the winter. My suggestion is take duck down coats with you. And slideproof hiking shoes in case.Always take then with you.not so sure if you can rent it there. |

![]() | So climbing mountains in the winter isn't a very good idea then. will rethink our schedule then. It's a shame though as I've read the views from the top are amazing. I read that I'd need a duck down coat but can't decide whether it is better to buy one when I arrive or before I leave. What do you suggest? Also, do you have any ideas as to where would be nice to visit in China then, especially as mountains are off the agenda now. Cheers! |

![]() | I should say Mt in the winter can be amazing. Worthy visiting. But cold.So if the temprature can't be a problem for you, them why bother? My suggestion is, For the city, a thick sweater and a jacket is fine, or maybe leather coat.FOr the Mt....Duck down. If you are familar with "made in China" ,then you should know that my suggestion is buy one here! Bi4 your hiking of course. Well, where to visit? Tell me what kind of trip you want. Culture, sightview, exotic,tropic,snow.....:) |

![]() | You can buy anything you want in China and a coat is no exception. You can go for a very inexpensive North Face knockoff from the Silk Market in Beijing. Those will last you through the winter and more and are very warm. An exceptional deal. I would say these winter coats are about $15 US...but don't quote me on that. Considering that a "real" Northface jacket could run you $300 US and upwards, this is not a shabby deal at all. If you want something fancier then just go to a more upscale department store. You will be paying just as much or more as you would pay for a coat back home if you go this route. We went up high altitudes in the winter in our $15 coats and had no problems. And to answer your last question... China is still SOOOOOO beautiful in the winter. The air is brisk and Beijing just feels so alive. There is little to no snow which means it is bitterly cold and dry but it's still lovely. Best of all... you can spend your nights over a steaming pot of HOT POT!!! You are so lucky! Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions! |

![]() | Though China in winter is also beautiful, not everyone can bear the chilly waether in northern cities, and the gloomy and cold climate may reduce the pleasure of traveling. Living in Xi'an in winter, we all do not like to go out except for working days. If you are interested in natural scene, then I'd like to suggest you to visit some southern cities in China like Guilin, Shanghai or its surrounding areas. I presume the water town near Shanghai will give you another kind of surprise. |

![]() | I prefer the winter. Everything is so beautiful and crystal. Though is would be a little cold, we can get more calm to taste the enchanting snow scene carefully. Only after the weary climb, we can appreciate the wonderful scenery from the peak. |

![]() | Thanks everyone for your comments and tips so far!! As China will be only one of other Far easern countries I will be visiting (Thailand, Japan, Malaysia etc) deciding what to pack is a little tricky, especially with the varying climates of each country. Unattractive and uncool... but how about thermal underwear (silk), will I be able to get hold of some in China? Ideally, I want to bring as little as possible from here and buy what I need out in the various locations and if need be, leave them there when I move on to my next destination. As prices will be alot cheaper than in UK I wouldn't feel too guilty about doing that. As for China, I want to experience as much as possible. I'd like to see beautiful natural landscapes, experience chinese culture and history, taste the Chinese delights... the list goes on! |
