Hi, I have a few questions about my upcoming trip to Beijing in October this year - can anyone help? We'll be travelling with 2 kids under 4. 1. Does anyone know if there will be any special events taking place in Beijing for National Day this year? 2. Where is the best place to see Shaolin Monks perform in Beijing? 3. How much would I expect to pay a taxi to take me to the Great Wall (Mutianyu or Simatai) and back? How much if I wanted an English speaking guide (we may not)? 4. What temples should we not miss? I'd really like to see some beautiful statues. 5. I would like to bring back a good quality souvenier for our home. Does not have to be wow or expensive or anything like that - just something that symbolises Beijing or China. I am planning to see what takes our fancy but any reccommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for any help anyone can give me, Rushi

I saw an acrobatic show that was exceptional! The threatre also had a magic show but I did not see that (a disappointment because I am a close-up magician). Unless you have really refined tastes for temples and architecture any of them will be impressive. You can probably get a driver for the day at about 300-400 RMB. I do not know if that would include a trip to the wall. Pay them at the end of the day. As for remembrances...consider a jade tea set or jade dragon (6000 RMB range is the size I liked), decorative fans, silk paintings, and of course the list is endless. Hopefully someone will give you some good advice on buying jade items... As for give away gifts for your return, several cartons of Chinese made cigarettes, compressed tea cubes, flower tea, bagged Beijing duck, wooden combs, fans, soap, local leather goods, gold jewelry and so on... I love the tea cups with lids, but transporting them may have unhappy results. The good tea is an especially appreciated gift. Unless you are going to ship the items from China Post, do not burden yourself with HEAVY items unless they will be very special things.

Simitai is wonderful - we went there on the bus, fascinating ride if you are interested in the local life, bus etiquette is quite different in China- the cost was about 50 rmb return and a wonderful trip. Simitai had locals who were on the wall giving you alot of history about the building and such - they spoke very good english. Simitai is very hot and very steep and VERY challenging but an exceptional experience as it is a lot quieter than other parts of the wall and not the throngs of tourists here. Good luck and have a great time.
