Hello everybody,

I live in Tianjin and I want to go in Lhasa (Tibet) but I don't really know how to travel here. I read that there is a new railway but it will be finished in 2005. With this it will be possible to travel from Beijing to Lhasa in 50 hours. Maybe with the old one it takes 17 days... :p

A friend told me that the plane ticket costs 2100 RMB I think it's not very expensive regarding to the distance.

Telle m if you know something about that.

Thank you very much my friends :)

Till now, there are no train from Lhasa to outer cities. So visiting Tibet, you have two choices: by bus or plane.

One land route is from Sichuan to Tibet, the distance is more than 2,000km, and will need about 15 to 20 days, the road conditions are rather hard except May or June.

Other route like Yunnan to Tbet, Xinjiang to Tibet are all not recommended to travelers.Only the road from Qinghai to Tibet is in a better condition, which is about 1'900km long.

Since you are located in Tianjin, I suggest you to take flight from Beijing to Lhasa, that will be the most convenient way. Yes the airfare will be around RMB2100, acceptable regarding the distance.

Notice: If you are a foreigner in China, you should apply a Tibet Travel Permit firstly.

You can get the permit via the branches of Tourism Bureau of tibet. The closest one of you is located in Beijing. Here is the address:

M021,No.14 Baoli Plaza,Dong zhi men nan da jie,
zip code 100027, tele 010-65035802 Fax:010-65936538.
p.s you may also find a travel angent which can handle this for you.

General speaking, they will not issure the Travel Permit to single foreigner if you don't join a tour arranged by some travel agency, coz it is said that foreigners are not allowed to walk around in Tibet. There must a travel agency be responsible for them.

Also it will be rather difficult for you to handle everything if traveling by yourself, Tibet is not like any other Chinese cities.

So as Tomorrow suggested, find a travel service to handle it for you should be a good idea.
