I'm going to be in China around 1 October, which I hadn't realised was the National Holiday. How problematic is it likely to be? Will tourist spots still be open and will I still be able to get flights?

Yes, the tourist spots will still be opened and you can be able to get flights (but not easily since there will be so many people on holiday!).
Just book the flights or trains in advance, otherwise it might be hard to get a ticket.

if you plan to travel to China, you'd better not choose to around 1 May or 1 October, because you won't see any good scenery, You only can see the person.
