![]() | When I wrote this thread, I started thinking back re my own position in SG, comparing myself/the situation now and that of say 20-30 yrs ago. Is SG better overall now it was before in term of level of poverty, social, economics, lifestyle, political, etc. Am I happier than I was as a qing nian just starting a career ? My answer was : I don't really know. The country seems/appears to be better - cleaner, better infrastructure, more high-tech, people more well educated, women doing much better, living conditions improved, etc. People generally now earn much more in absolute term, more own cars, travel more, live in better houses, etc, etc. But costs have also leaped. On the other hand, more people get stressed out, the pace of life has leaped, the days seem shorter, everyone seems to be in a hurry, there is less time spent with families & friends. It is most like work, work & work. Everything has a price. At the end of the day, my answer to this question of "Are u happier now than before ?" is just your own perception, your own feeling of it. If u feel so, then it is so. And to this I beleive most will feel so - else we will be so miserable living in the present & we will resort to looking towards the super-beings for consolation. In this respect, do we witness more people turning to religions now ? If it is, I think it is 1 of the bad sign. |

![]() | ah Pinetree.... as a foreigner.... here are my random thoughts... [by the way, I saw lots of beautiful pinetrees in my travels this summer] Often age envies youth, so much lamenting of the past is in fact a longing for the carelessness and freedom of youth. Age often maligns youth, age is jealous. Who knows if China or the world are better off ? In what sense ? We have a better standard of living. Spiritually are we better off ? I doubt it. Technologically we are more advanced though. ha ha! Us dear women folk... what about us ? Better off for having access to education, the vote, work.... worse off perhaps trying to juggle all of these along with the traditional roles of wife/mother. (sorry, not qualified to comment on Middle East customs) Living without TV ? I rarely watch TV. I wouldn't notice if you took it away! Agree 100% with Conny...Living without my computer and internet would drive me CRAZY. Education is always good. But education does not equate to being wise. Education also cannot be responsible for how it is used/abused by those who receive it. The human capacity for acquiring knowledge is what takes us forward.... but humanity itself chooses how to use that knowledge... we can look for a cure for cancer and we can create atomic weapons.... Better off.... ? Usually it refers to financial security... Better off also aligns itself with convenience, we can take a car instead of walking, a washing machine instead of our hands etc. Healthcare, social security, life expectancy are all 'better' in general. If only we had a time machine... |

![]() | Loveisverb's comment bears repeating: "past is history, future is mystery, present is a gift, so we call it 'present'" Enjoy here and now. True 'dat! In the current American gangsta slang. The things lost with industrialization, computerization, and societal manipulation are precious and irreplaceable. It is true for any society. My memories of 1978 China are much different than 2006 China. My memories of 1956 Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania are much different from my 2006 impressions of it. When progress is defined as modernization and the pursuit of riches it destroys everything. We are making our own Hell and eagerly running through the gates because we have so little appreciation of true wealth: family, love, loyalty, honor, and contentment. I define progress as the development of societal integrity. |
