My husband, 14 year old son and myself will be coming to Kunming in February for a year. We will both be working the school year and want to travel throughout China as much as possible in holidays etc. Any tips about places to visit besides the obvious ones, particularly in the Yunnan would be appreciated.

Sorry this reply is so late! Yunnan province is one of the most beautiful places in all of China and it is perfect for those of us who like some adventure in our travels. This is just my opinion of places and things to go see:

Zhongdian (Shangri-La)
Visit the Songzanlin Monastery
Take in the Tibetan culture throughout the town
Go to Ringna Temple

Tiger Leaping Gorge is a MUST. It is so beautiful and serene there. I believe it takes a few days to walk the entire gorge and it is a little dangerous so please heed all warnings. You can also drive over to the first bend of the Yangtze River. It's not that interesting but it is pretty.

Definitely go to Lijiang. One of the most picturesque cities in the world. Old town Lijiang is a UNESCO heritage site so they are trying to preserve its beauty. The Naxi people live in Lijiang and it's interesting to see their culture and dwell amongst it. Some people may feel that spending three days in Lijiang is way too long but I couldn't spend enough time there. It's a very comforting and serene town.

You can also go to Xishuangbanna for a tropical feel. It's a cross between China and Southeast Asia. The weather is hot and humid, the plants are beautiful, and it's just a lot of fun. The Dai minority lives in Banna and the night we were there, there was a traditional Dai wedding celebration and we were able to take part in it. It was a wonderful way to spend the evening. We went way into the country for that so if you are just visiting the city, I don't think you will encounter that.

Lastly... one place you should definitely go (unrelated to Yunnan) is Xi'an. I think this is one of the best cities to visit. The culture and history of this one city is so enriching and intriguing. I could spend an eternity in Xi'an! Once in Xi'an, you can take a bus to the Longmen Grottos in Luoyang. This place will take your breath away.

Have fun in your travels and good luck! Hope this helped a bit.

Dear Rmayekar
Re your comment about the Longman Grottos - could this be done on a day trip from Xi'an or would I have to spend a night at Luoyang?
Hoping for reply
Sincerely
G
