Has anyone done it. Can you reccomend a good spot to stop off for the night?
Are there any 'express trains?
Are the hard sleepers suitable for shorter people?

There are direct trains from shanghai to guilin, which will take about 27 hours. They are express trains...
Hard sleeper is suitable for everyone unless you are too big.

K149,from the south railway station of Shanghai to Guilin,17:45---20:58,27hrs13mins,around 351yuan for hard sleeper.

K181,from Shanghai to the north railway station of Guilin,16:53---18:53,26hrs,around 341yuan for hard sleeper.
