When you buy a train ticket...

Suppose it is from Guangzhou to Xi'an.....

Can you get off along the way...see the sights...and get back on the train to your destination?

Or must you buy a ticket to each destination along the way?

Hi Griz

As far as I'm aware the tickets you buy for the train are only valid for that day of travel. There's no chance for you to get off, explore and get back on (either on the same day or on a different day) and continue your journey. To do this you must buy a new ticket to and from each destination.

Actually, I have often wondered about this too, because I've read about it being done, in an article by a Chinese travel writer. I have also noticed on the tickets it says 'valid for three days' and I've seen counters for adjusting your tickets at the exits of train stations... maybe it is possible? Anyone else heard of it being done?

A ChinaRail pass like the old EuroRail pass would be a winner for me. :)

Theoretically possible, but only for some trains (not possible for example, the Z trains) and the duration would be different, if possible. It's more hassle than it's worth. Besides, when you board using your old ticket, it'll be a no-seat/sleeper (ie standing) ticket, what a waste of money.

And, unfortunately, no rail pass system available for China.
