| Reading a book about a mountain climber teamed up with a photographer and their translator travelling to a rarely seen valley in Yunnan containing a small minority peoplegroup. Not that many years ago they say this area was forbidden to any foreigners. Are there still areas of Yunnan off limits to non- Chinese ? |

| I am a lawyer in Kunming, I can give you exact answer: There is no areas forbidden to foreigners. At the beginnig of 1980's, central government has regulations that some counties were not open to foreigners, but from 1990's, these regulations had been all cancelled. so now you can go to anywhere in China without no limitation. | I appreciate your reply to my query. Now I can better plan my travel in and around beautiful Yunnan. Do you recall the reasons given at the time for lifting restrictions on travel to these forbidden areas ? I often find it interesting to read the reasoning given for political aboutfaces. your (would-be) friend - louis |

| I'm still reading! Another book written by a Chinese man - born and raised in mainland China. He mentions areas in the north of China wherein he wasn't allowed to visit without specific approval from the authorities. He snuck in anyhow, but got into some mild trouble. this happened in the late 1990's. But you're saying that I can travel without restriction all through Yunnan at least, right? Happy New Year! |

| I'm afraid that some remote areas in China are not open to non-Chinese people, such as border areas, and military areas. Tourists can visit some areas with special permit and the others are completely forbidden.Tibet is a good example. |
