Question about foreigner approved housing

Is the government in China still strict about foreigner designated housing? Do I have to live in apartments approved for foreigners or can I live wherever I can find a place? Just curious.

The government now is not strict with the living places of foreigners, but i think the approved apartments are more secure and well-equipped.

How can I find and recognize these "approved apartments"? I intend to go to Beijing but I didn't know this sort of difference in the choose of house where to live...
