Hello... I've been searching like crazy over the internet for the past few weeks. I hope someone can help me out here. I'm travelling to Shanghai on March 2007. Is there a train from Hong Kong to Shanghai? How much is back and forth for soft sleeper? I will be going there from the Philippines. The plane i will take will drop me at Hong Kong coz it's very expensive if i buy a flight from Philippines to Shanghai. So i decided to just take a plane to Hong Kong and ride a train to Shanghai. Hope that it is cheaper. Will I be able to take a train to enter China when I'm in Hongkong? Or Hong Kong visa and china visa is different? Will China require another visa? Lastly please send me telephone number wherein I can contact HongKong and book a train ticket as early as now. Please help.....

I don't think there are direct trains from HK to Shanghai. But you can take a bus/train/walk to Guangzhou/Shenzhen first, and transfer a train to Shanghai there. The soft sleeper ticket is under 600 rmb. Yes, you need a Chinese visa will entering from HK to mainland.

There're most definitely direct trains between Hong Kong and Shanghai. They would be departing on odd days of the month (eg 1st, 3rd, 5th etc) in March 2007. Take a look at http://www.it3.kcrc.com/ Yes, you need another visa to enter mainland China, you must apply for this beforehand (you can also get it done quite easily in Hong Kong). However, most nationalities do not need to apply for a visa in advance in order to enter Hong Kong.

Thank you for your advise. :-) I'm also concerned about the visa to enter China. I'm going to Shanghai alone... Can anyone tell me how to get a Chinese visa? Where can I get them after I get down the plane in Hong Kong? Also will the visa be okay to stay in China for 2 weeks. I'm taking a 2 weeks vacation. i will be travelling to Shanghai, Suzhou and Hangzhou.

Why don't you check with the Chinese embassy in your own country if you need a visa to China for 2 weeks (14 days) of travel, and if you do, just apply for it there? You mentioned that you're going to Hong Kong from the Philippines but I don't know if you're holding a Filipino passport. Forever Bright (http://www.fbt-chinavisa.com.hk) is a good and reliable place to be using in Hong Kong to get your Chinese visa, should you not get it before leaving your own country.
