I am travelling to Hanoi then onto Nanning. Can anyone advise whats the best way to get to Nanning.

There are certainly buses as I have seen the tickets being sold in Nanning. There is also a train line and no doubt you can get a plane.

Why not go to a travel agent wherever you are and get some basic info and then come back to see if someone has personal info to add to that?
