Chinese visa extension?

I'm going to China to travel for a few months. I have a year-long multiple entry tourist visa, but it says I can only stay in China for 30 days at a time. I really don't want to leave and come back every month. Is there anything that can be done about this? Has anyone had a similar problem?

If no-one offers a better suggestion, go to Hong Kong and get a 3 month visa, the repeat 3 more times.
