In my experience your problem is with the airline, they probably willl not carry you fearing that you will not be allowed to enter and then they incur the cost of flying you back to Canada.

Contact the airline and find out what they say. Contact a local travel agent, preferably one that specialises in China, and probably run by Chinese.

Or buy an onward train ticket to Hong Kong or Macau. Again check the visa rules there, but I entered Macau overland and there was no concern about tickets there. But you will need another visa entry to China to get back in again.

Hope this gives some ideas... please post an update of any info or experience... I and many other ad hoc travellers woudl like to know :)

Dear Kyle,
I came back to China on a three month tourist visa and a one-way ticket. No problems. You could be leaving overland or any variety of ways. It will be the airline if anything that has reservations but one-way tickets whould be available.

Hi Kyle,

What I think you are saying is, you have traveled to Canada from China, with a round trip airline ticket ?? Now, for some reason, you are concerned that your return to China, with only the return portion of the previous round trip ticket, will somehow present a problem for your re-entry into China ??

If this is, in fact, your concern, I think you should not worry. When you check in for your flight to China, the airline will only care about your Passport and your valid Chinese travel Visa; they will not care, if you have a return ticket, as this is not an issue to their operation. The airline is only required to check the aforementioned travel documents. Similarly, once you land in China at your POE, the Chinese immigration/customs officials only care about your valid entry visa to China, which of course, they will date stamp. They will not question you about or ask to see, a return ticket. At some point, all they will care about is that you do not overstay your visa. Whether you return to Canada, or go on to Hong Kong, or some other destination, your mode of transportation be it plane, train, bus, car, or on foot, as well as when you purchase it, is strictly your business.

This has been my experience after mutltiple trips from North America to China.

To reiterate JABAROOTOO's post, I also traveled to China on a one-way ticket and had no problems, though I landed in HK and took the train to China.
