Is carrying binoculars worth the carry weight and risk of loss?

With the heavy haze in the cities and risk of theft, do you think it is worth the effort to carry good binoculars while touring China?

So far it seems most of you do not feel binoculars are worth the carry weight & risk.

What would convince you to carry binoculars?
