If you are interested in Chinese movies, you may have heard about director Zhang Yimou. If you ask what Hot is at the box office, I will be sure to invite you to experience the blockbuster in Chinese cinemas now: Zhang Yimou’s “Curse of the Golden Flower” (alias “The City of Golden Armor” ).

Although nearly two months has passed since its premiere, the movie is still popular.

The story is set in an undefined period of the Tang Dynasty (618 - 907) and there are several important factors within the plot, for example, the golden chrysanthemum flowers, and the traditional Chinese herbal medicine. If you want to know more about Chinese culture and movie, or you are just a fan of Director Zhang, Chow Yun-fat, Ms. Gong Li, or Jay Chow, you should never miss this movie.

The movie is really over the top. And I think Zhang Yimou revises history too much, not only in this movie, but in "Hero" and his opera "The First Emperor". This movie hurt my eyes!! It was like Tang Dynasty crossed with Louis XIV France, with palace designs graced with psychedelic colours from the 60's. Make sure you bring your sunglasses if you go see this film.

The scene in the Curse of the Golden Flower is the most exciting. The golden flower is really a spectacle. But I don’t find the plot a good one. In the ancient times, women pay more attention to the morality and unreasoning faithfulness to their husbands, let alone the empress of the whole nation. In that time, a woman with a little defection will incur a letter by husband to wife announcing divorce. In my opinion, the film is not truthful to the mainstream of the history.

Someone said that the audience buy the ticket to see the sorrow and bitterness, not happiness and joy.

So some of the movies tell us stories of betraying, cheat, revenge and evil.

Sorry, a little bit far from the topic... But what you have seen from the Curse of the Golden Flower?

Gurty, the plot of the film is not so realistic. Part of the reason is that the story is from a PLAY written in the early 1900's set in Shanghai, I think (Lei Yu).

Regarding your comment about women being moral and faithful in that time -- that is not completely true either. During the Tang Dynasty, women had more freedom perhaps than in the following times in China. They wore low-cut dresses, went horse-back riding, hunting, and could travel without be escorted. The First Empress (who declared herself the Emperor) of China -- the ONLY Chinese woman who ever declared herself Emperor, ruled during the Tang Dynasty. If you know her story, she murdered several of her own children and plotted against other concubines to gain the highest position in the kingdom. She conceived her first child in a temple! (how moral is that)
