Hi there,

I'm planning to come to china for the first time (3 weeks in august). The plan is to fly into shanghai, travel around and fly out from beijing. I don't know alot about china (apart from the most famous things), and after looking at guide books beijing looks brilliant. I am worried though about missing places like guilin or them being difficult or time consuming to get to. Any ideas on where you would go if you had 3 weeks and were happy to backpack around the place? (and any place that you definitely would not miss out?)

Thanks for any advice

Well, what are your own sightseeing interests and preferences? One man's nectar is easily another's hemlock; what I like might not be your cup of tea.

For 3 weeks,I think you can visit Yunnan province(Kunming,Dali,Lijiang and Shanggria),Guilin,Xi'an and Beijing;

Another:Arrive in Shanghai,then travel around that area,including Hangzhou,Suzhou,Nanjing and some water towns.Then to Yellow Mt.Go to Shaolin Temple and Luoyang,to Xi'an,then to Beijing.

Good luck!

Fast growing city in China, Shenzhen. There a park “Window of the world” and Shenzhen is the window of China.

Sorry Lionpower, but what is there in Shenzhen but shops? I understand that Chinese are proud of this city which has grown so fast and is an example of the new China, but as a tourist I prefer the older more historic cities. So I would send a tourist to the nearby Guangzhou instead whuich has interesting markets, Simian Island, Chens Family Courtyard/Museum and more. But if I am wrong, Lp, please tell us more about Shenzhen.
