I have won a corporate trip to Beijing for 5 days in May. After that I plan to travel to Xi'an, Chongqing and leave out of Shanhai. Any places that you can suggest along that route or perhaps other suggestions. After Beijing I only have about a week.

Don't try to do too much and get as much booked from home as possible or you will waste a lot of time as China is not an easy place to travel ad hoc. I travel ad hoc so I speak from experiencee... but it is the experience of errors and the unexpected that I am looking for, but I have the time for it.

If you only have a week then you will need to fly.
Beijing -- overnight Z train -- Xi'an (2.5 days) -- flight -- Chongqing (2 days) -- flight -- Shanghai (2.5 days)
