HI, I am planning to travel from Hong Kong to Xian via train in mid-May. I have read that I may have trouble getting train seats as most of China is on holiday then. ??

Hi, Spacey, it's ok to travel in China in mid-May. From May 1st to 7th is the Chinese Goldern Week. Most Chinese will travel by trian during this period.

No problem with the time of year as May holiday week ends on 7/5. However there's no direct train from Hong Kong to Xi'an. The nearest transit point would be Guangzhou.

Hi, Spacey, It will be easy to get a train ticket in middle-May. I've been to Xian once from Guangzhou in middle-April. I went to buy the ticket only two days before my departure. As far as I know, if it is not during the public holidays, tickets are easily available. It cost me 28 hours on the way. Really exhausting! So if possible, plane is a better choice! Enjoy your tirip in Xian.

Compare the price of train and plane. You may get a good discount as the others have suggested since it is after the national holiday and you'll have another whole day to explore

Yes, shops are open most of the golden week. Small shops never close and the larger ones employ students.
