I am planning to visit China some time in September to October this year. I will be some where around Taiyuan or Pingyao at that time. What I want to know is that Oct 1 is a Holiday time and lots of people travel. Will I find it hard to find a Hotel or room somewhere?

Yes it will. That week is their National Week to celebrate Mao's victory over the Guomingtang (Nationalist Party) and is similar to the golden week in May. Train stations and bus stations will be jam packed with people going to visit their relatives.

In 2005, I went from Guangzhou to Hong Kong and the buses and the queues at the border were definitely more lenghty than usual. Also, many hotels in HK were full, though the hostel I stayed at (Mt. Davis) had a few open room vacancies.

If possible, I would make prior arrangements to book a room.
