FOR any passengers cruising the Yangtze river in the next few months, you should be aware that NO ships are actually passing through the LOCKS. All passengers will embark or disembark near the dam site and take a land tour of the site. Transport to and from Yichang will be by bus and depend on whether you are travelling solo or with a group. Package tours of course will be bused onwards to Yichang or Wuhan. But for independent travelers be warned that you are expected to make your own way from the bus/train/plane to where the ships dock, which is over an hour upstream from Yichang some 30 plus kms away. Some cruiselines advertise a shuttle from the Yichang Tourist Centre to the ships at Maoping but I have heard this may no longer be the case. And be warned that your common, everyday, garden variety tiaxi is not allowed into the area where the ships dock or the dam site.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IF ANYONE has any more up todate and accurate information to add to this it will be appreciated. The HYDROFOIL of course gives a complete service with bus transfer to and from the damsite included in the price. Arrival and departure is from the bus station near the train station. The Hydorfoil now only operates from Yichang (Maoping) to Wanzhou. From Wanzhou to Chongqing you can catch the bus, tickets are sold on the hydrofoil (3hours).

THE REASON FOR THE REDUCTION IN THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC THROUGH THE LOCKS The lock gates are being extended to facilitate the new water levels. The northern locks have just been closed after the reopening of the southern passage. This is expected to be completed by June 30th and causes a reduction of up to 60% in the flow of traffic as upstream and downstream flow of traffic alternates every 24hrs. So only what is considered essential traffic is passing through at the moment. Mean while upstream here in Chongqing, the city is experiencing some of the lowest river water levels in years, especially in the Jialing River, a major tributary which splits the city in two. This summer may very well bring on another severe drought in the region if little rain falls in the catchment areas.

Hi Jabarootoo Your posting above answers a question I sent directly to you. Thanks. We will probably book one of the hydrofoil trips. Undecided whether to go upstream or downstream at this time. Depends on the ease of getting into Chongqing or Yichang from Xian. Any recommendations? Thanks Dennis and Kie Monaghan aka damco
