China to Japan: Plane or Boat? | |

![]() | I'm spending 5 weeks in China this summer and I want to continue my travels into Japan afterwards. The problem is flying into Japan costs around £400 (or more!). I have seen that you can get a ferry from Shanghai (with the Shanghai Ferry Company) for £110 for a 1st class cabin. This seems a lot better value and the extra time isn't a problem. I do have some questions however and I'd really appreciate some advice: 1. Is it possible to buy a ticket once I arrive in Shanghai? (I will be there around 1 week before departing to Japan). If so, where can I buy a ticket? Can I just buy 1 ticket rather than having to fill a cabin? 2. How safe is it to travel? ie. is it overcrowded? etc. How safe is my luggage? 3. Does the boat still leave Shanghai on tuesdays and arrive in Osaka on thursdays? 4. How expensive is the food/drink onboard? Thanks a lot John |

![]() | Hi Jone, Welcome to China this summer! I can answer some of your questions above, hope this will be helpful to your travel. As far as I know, flying from Shanghai to Osaka will be about 1,800 RMB. And if you go there by ship, the price is nearly the same. (First-class room 1,600 RMB and second-class 1,300 RMB. Breakfast has included in the price) China-Japan International Ferry Co., Ltd in Shanghai can offer you a perfect ship called 'Xin jianzhen' to take you from Shanghai to Osaka. The ship departs every Saturday and arrives at Osaka the next day (Monday). Boarding Place: No.100 Yangshupu Road, Shanhai International Passenger Transport Dock, in Shanghai. You should take the ship at 11:00 am. every Saturday at the dock. Passengers should be on board 2 hours before the ship departs. And don’t forget to take your passport to talk the ship. As for the ticket you can buy it at the local dock. If there are more than ten passengers as a group to take the ship, you can get more than 10%’s discount. 30 kg. luggages can be taken by every passenger. In addition, there is a ship named 'Suzhou' that can take you to Osaka which leaves the dock at 11:00am.every Turesday. All the above two ships are the good ships in Shanghai sailing to Osaka. So safety will not be a problem. Enjoy your trip! |

![]() | Thanks for your advice Heidi. The Suzhou is probably on a better day for me, though I thought that ship was with the Shanghai Ferry Company rather than the China-Japan Ferry Company? The cheapest flight I have found from Shanghai to Osaka is now £280 with China Eastern Airlines. Where can you get flights for 1,800 RMB? That's a really good price! Thanks John |

![]() | Sorry John, 3,050 Yuan (Tax not included) should be the price for flight from Shanghai to Osaka with China Eastern Airlines. 1,800 RMB is the discounted price for the flight. Usually it's hard to get the discounted price for a international flight. |
