![]() | The first batch of F-117 Nighthawk is going to retire U.S. Air Force F-117 "Nighthawk" stealth fighters will gradually retire. Holloman AirForce Base in New Mexico, the first batch of six F-117 fighters recetly will have a final flight, then they'll retire when arrive Nevada later. Holloman AirForce Base 49th Fighter Wing Commander David Goldfeens said in a ceremony held on the 12th : "This incredible aircraft had completed its mission." It was reported that Bush had announced last year——52 F-117 "Nighthawk" fighters of Holloman AirForce base will be demobilized. Pentagon has made plans that they'll take F-22 "Raptor" fighter to replace those retired F-117. Goldfeens said, for the next year and a half, the remaining F-117 will continue to serve in the 49th Fighter Wing, which has one squadron of aircraft deployed in S.Korea. It is reported that, F-117 owns "fighter" in the name, but it is actually a "precision stealth bomber platform." F-22 "Raptor" fighter is not only the "Night Hawk" advanced stealth characteristics, but also a real air combat raptor. ![]() |

![]() | It has been pointed out that the plane was actually designed in the late 70's and early 80's under great secrecy. The design is now about 30 years old and technology has developed past that used in the F-117. The Air force wanted to retire them earlier but they did so well in the 1st Gulf war that Congress told the Air Force to keep them. They are basically a first generation product and there are probably some problems that they don't want to talk about. These problems will be corrected in future aircraft. |
