The speaking environment is the most important. After you have some basic language knowledge, try to create a chance to travel to the coutry, it's the fastest way to learn the language. I know some guys from Germany and France and US spend 2 months in summer in China. It's a great chance for them to learn the language, know the culture and even find business oppertunities!
