I plan to be in Xi'an in a few days and a climb sounds excellent.... is this just a good solid climb or do we need ropes?

No, ropes are not needed. There are stairs.

Some places are very steep and stairs are narrow. You can stand only half of your feet on. A pair of gloves must be prepared as you have to hold the rusty iron chain tightly. You can buy a pair at the foot of the mountai. It costs only 1 cny. It has been over four years since I visited the mountain. Things may change~~

Mt. Hua is great and famous for the steep. It will be a nice climb if you take good care of yourself.
