I rarely see any news on AIDS or HIV in China, only when the World AIDS Day is around the corner do CCTV air some 'case studies' on people who were infected through blood transfusion. I have not seen any documentaries on people who became infected through drug or unprotected sex. There are more than 800,000 infected case in record, and the authorities estimated the actual amount can be more than 4 times of that. I suspect even if the authorities do have that number, we won't hear an announcement to authenticate any result made from a private research. Just a word of caution, AIDS is transmitted through body fluid. So in the worst case scenario, you can actually be infected through saliva if both your partner and you are suffering from a very common oral disease that involves bleeding, like an ulcer, bleeding gums or even a cavity in the tooth.

Aids is definitely a big problem in China but if you go by per capita reported cases of Aids in China is lower than many Western countries. If there are 800,000 diagnosed cases of Aids that equals to 0.000615% of the population (1.3 billion). Compared to Canada (60,000 cases/33 million people = 0.00182%) and the US (440,000/300 million = 0.00147%).

hey AZNTONYM... I don't disagree with your thinking but maybe yr maths is out a shade, like a factor of 100. On my calculations, China has a diagnosed HIV/Aids rate of 0.0165% (not 0.000615%), which is still a low figure by world standards. But remember it is a diagnosed rate, not an actual rate and there can be quite a difference.

It is estimated by UNAIDS that in Swaziland and Botswana about 39% of people are HIV-positive. So, maybe China or US are not the real problem, I think Africa is. Carlos

In Swaziland more people die because of AIDS than there is new born babies. So, a little maths and we can see that Swaziland as a nation will not exist after 10 years or so. Carlos

GUEST98158 | Sure, nicotine is a mild altering drug. But, the chemical state of the mind is also altered by exercise and sex. Should we ban that too? |

Of course as every Chinese person knows, all foreigners have AIDS and are carrying that along with huge backpacks, American flags and wads of cash. Avoid contacts with foreigners, humour them, tell them 'you speak very good English', don't shake hands, offer them a cigarette to ward off germs . . .
