Now Chinese export open the door of English speaking people’s job market, office, shop, factory, transportation, every where. Is present Chinese teaching English curriculum sufficient for their job? ![]() | My response is wider than syllabus, that's only a small part of what needs to be considered. In my experience teaching English majors in university, NO! But first you need to know about the 'university' I taught at. Each syllabus needs to be modernised.... my college was exceptionally backward looking (university students not allowed out of the campus during the week... and many other things) so it is not surprising that the syllabus was inappropriate. There was almost NO Ebnglish language stimulation - NO modern books on any subject, no pictures etc on walls, few English language newspapers. I was stopped from showing an English language movie each Sunday evening because 'I was using the room too much' - no-one else needed it! NO students seemed to be failed, even though I had seven students who had NO spoken English ability at all! There was also little help with passing the TEM exams, indeed many of the students couldn't even pass the CET basic exam (for non-Engl majors). It's true the students were mostly marginal, and should not have been doing a uni course based on their Middle school achievements, so the graduation results may be expected to be modrate. This uni was privately run for profit, within the mainstream system. Also, uni's should not provide many places for English Majors. What are needed are combined courses: English with one of Business, Law, Engineering etc. That will help equip them for employemnt in businesses that need some language skill. Maybe other indstitutions are better, another a few kilometres away seemd to be, at least it didnt treat the students like prisoners. I would like to hear from others. And, if nothing else, I understand that China .IS changing fast and somethings may slip behind |

![]() | Now my experience in a private language school, you know, the ones that are outside school hours. I joined one in a smaller town in Guangzhou on the recommendation of a friend - though I had always said I would keep clear of such places. There was a notice on the wall that said teachers must adhere to the syllabus for the class - cool. The problem was that there was't a syllabus for any class! Here is a pile of books, teach what you like with emphasis on spoken English. Just make sure the students enjoy it so the parents will keep paying the fees. Some students had NO English, others were excellent and needed very special help, all in the same class. The bottom line was don't let education of the interests of the students interfere with making a profit. I quit for many reasons and the school folded soon afterwards because (it seems) the boss was cheating his partners and they found out. So LP, my experience in two types of institutions is that the syllabus is just the tip of the iceberg, there are many issues. I am coming back for more !!! |
